Who runs Germany? The intersection of politics and business interests
Money rules the world is a well-known saying. However the exact role of the major companies and banks in political life is often hidden behind a veritable torrent of references to the independence of the peoples representatives who are responsible solely to their consciences, and the people who are, after all, the supreme sovereign power in politics. Recent reports and studies by journalists now demonstrate, very concretely, how financial interests govern Germany and what interests are at stake. The fact that there exists a measure of corruption and nepotism in politics and business is not exactly new, but the new material gives a revealing picture of the extent to which business interests determine political policy. In the German capital of Berlin, for example, many of the leading politicians have numerous additional jobs with which they are quite legally able to earn large sums of money, but are nevertheless reluctant to discuss.
Scriptwriter scored with pulp fiction
THERE is a case to be made that Sidney Sheldon was one of the most influential Americans of the 20th century. Certainly, few others can have so effectively disseminated their particular vision of the good life, or have made such telling use of modern media: as an Oscar-winning screenwriter, as the creator of television shows and, above all, as blockbuster novelist par excellence and the most translated author in the world. Sheldon was the patron saint of the airport bookstall. His thrillers, among them The Other Side of Midnight (1975), Bloodline (1977) and A Rage of Angels (1980), were windows into a world of power, fame and money to which his readers aspired, and into which Sheldon himself had escaped from early poverty. Much like the works of contemporaries such as Arthur Hailey and Harold Robbins, his books were consciously constructed on epic lines.
