The researchers -- from the United States, Germany, France, Australia and Britain -- wrote in the journal Science that seas have been edging up more rapidly since 1990 than at any time in more than a century, outpacing computer projections. "The data now available raise concerns that the climate system, in particular sea level, may be responding more quickly than climate models indicate," Stefan Ramstorf of Germany’s Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and co-authors wrote. Still, they said it was too early to say for sure that the accelerated rise was linked to greenhouse gases from human burning of fossil fuels. It might, they said, be caused by some natural climate variation. Rising seas, widely linked to a warming stoked by emissions of greenhouse gases, could swamp low-lying Pacific islands, large tracts of Bangladesh or the southern United States and threaten cities from Shanghai to Buenos Aires.
Board reluctantly OKs raise former administrator promised
Some members of McKeesport Area school board are unhappy about a pay raise the board reluctantly approved for a school administrator by a 5-3 vote last week. The raise increases the salary of Charlene Greene, whose title is special assignment coordinator to the superintendent, by $5,000 over a two-year period. Some board members say the raise was granted by the district's former superintendent, Pat Risha, without informing the board or seeking its approval. "I have a real problem with this when it is coming from taxpayer money," said board member Barbara Stevenson, who, along with members Kathy Ritchie and Paula Milko, voted against it. "We did not authorize it." The raise was not accounted for in the district's latest budget. According to school officials, Mr. Risha promised the raise to Ms.
An appreciation: Mintz on Molly Ivins
A spirited writer even as she was dying of breast cancer, Ivins wrote only a few weeks ago that 'Bush is just standing there like a frozen rabbit' and 'it's up to you and me, Bubba' to end this war. By Morton Mintz mintz@earthlink.net Molly Ivins appended this "personal note" to her column of Dec. 13, 1999: "I have contracted an outstanding case of breast cancer, from which I fully intend to recover. I don't need get-well cards, but I would like the beloved women readers to do something for me: Go. Get. The. Damn. Mammogram. Done." I'd bet the store that her readers—certainly including myself—hoped and prayed for Molly's recovery because to read her was to love her. It was not to be: She died January 31st. No one reading that column of six years ago would have guessed at the bad news at the end.
