Firefighter faces 6-shift suspension
A Huntsville firefighter whose job was on the line for criticizing outgoing Fire Chief Dusty Underwood would get a major dock in pay if the city's disciplinary recommendation withstands a planned legal challenge. Bo Emerson, attorney for fire Capt. Marc Thrailkill, said late Wednesday he plans to appeal the proposed six-shift pay suspension of Thrailkill. A shift is considered 24 hours. Thrailkill, president of the Huntsville Firefighters Local 1833, found himself in hot water with the city administration after writing an article in the union's newsletter last fall critical of Underwood. An independent hearing officer led a fact-finding proceeding last month and forwarded his findings to the city's personnel director, who recommended the pay suspension.

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales has had to spell out the site's community media guidelines again after Microsoft apparently paid a blogger to work on various technical entries. Wikipedia is currently the 13th most popular UK website according to comScore, so Wales faces an uphill battle to keep the site clear of PR and corporate clutter. According to the Australian, Microsoft has confirmed that it commissioned Topologi CTO Rick Jelliffe to correct what it said were inaccuracies in entries. Writing on O'Reilly's XML blog last week, Jelliffe said he rarely uses Microsoft products and was surprised too be approached by them. But he reckoned the firm is frustrated by what it thinks are partial entries written by open source advocates, and wanted "independent" Jelliffe to edit for a couple of days.
