Cursive writing becomes vanishing skill
HOLLAND - Each day, a group of fifth-grade students at Douglas Elementary use the first 15 minutes of Pam Wicks' class to practice their handwriting. They may represent a final effort to keep the art of cursive handwriting alive in public schools. For as long as modern handwriting has existed, many schools have taught students how to make their cursive letters look good on a sheet of paper. Kids used those skills to write reports, answer essay questions and compose notes to friends. .

Catholic schools in need of a prayer
As heat hissed from the radiators and sun shone on fresh snow out the window, students at St. Joseph School pondered an algebra problem on the blackboard Wednesday morning. The seven students in the room -- all girls -- constitute the entire eighth grade at the co-educational Roman Catholic school on Allen Street. The small class size reflects a large math problem. Statewide enrollment at Vermont parochial schools has declined from 3,494 to 2,600 over the past six years. The trend is particularly pronounced at St. Joseph, a parish school across the street from the historic stone St. Joseph Co-Cathedral. This year, the school has 85 students, fewer than half the 179 students who were enrolled 10 years ago. St. Joseph has launched an enrollment campaign to reverse the trend and stay open for the long term in a statewide Roman Catholic Diocese that last week signaled that schools with steadily dwindling enrollment might face consolidation or closure.
