Teaching cursive effortlessly
Inga Dubay could never have guessed that one handwritten letter from a friend would be the beginning of a lifelong fascination with handwriting.
"The letter was written in italic handwriting," Dubay said. "The letters were just so beautiful, I thought to myself, 'I'm going to learn how to do this!'"
Living in Ashland during the mid-'60s, Dubay's academic career began to go down a different path after receiving the letter.
"I was originally a painting and drawing major," Dubay said. "I thought, 'I'll just take one class and learn italic calligraphy.' Then the next term was the history of letters, and I just got more and more interested in the subject."
Now, Dubay is one half of the Getty-Dubay Italic Handwriting Series, along with her business partner Barbara Getty.
Jazz at the library ...
The assignment was to report on the Oak Park Public Library's six-week appreciation of jazz, titled, "Looking at Jazz; America's Art Form." From Jan. 31 to March 7 the library will present two concomitant programs-a joyous and bluesy mix, including portions of two Ken Burns jazz documentaries, additional rare jazz films, recordings, lectures, book discussions and free live concert performances. On consecutive Wednesdays at 7 p.m., George Bailey, Ph.D., creative writing professor at Columbia College, will host and moderate six weekly, two-hour sessions in the second floor Veterans Room. Utilizing the documentary approach, Bailey will show archival footage and play quality (sometimes poor quality) recordings to punctuate audience discussions. His presentations will range from slave songs and pre-1917 New Orleans "Gumbo" to late Dizzy Gillespie and Latin jazz, with an awful lot in between.

A New Wonder Woman at WB?
Warner Bros. Pictures and Silver Pictures are quietly in the process of buying a Wonder Woman spec script from newcomers Matthew Jennison and Brent Strickland, says The Hollywood Reporter. The studio and producer Joel Silver have been developing a big-screen version of the DC Comics superhero, with "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" creator Joss Whedon writing the script and attached to direct. The trade says the purchase is a pre-emptive measure aimed at taking the script off the market to protect itself against the possibility that any similarities between the scripts could be fodder for future legal action. It is understood that the Jennison-Strickland script is set against the backdrop of World War II, while Whedon's script is set in the present day. Silver has no interest in making a period Wonder Woman, however.
