Schools bring in diversity expert
When then-state Education Commissioner Betty Sternberg wrote a letter in April 2006 to the Greenwich Public Schools warning officials that several schools were racially imbalanced or in danger of becoming so, she was effectively writing a letter to herself.
The letter, written to former Superintendent Larry Leverett, said the state would be monitoring Greenwich's progress in racially balancing its schools. Sternberg took over as superintendent in August, and the problem became hers to tackle.

Writing About Girl Talk is Like Dancing about Architecture
So I went to the Girl Talk show at the Varsity Friday night, and here's my thoughts. I will say it was fun, and I will say it was quite a spectacle to see fifty+ people shakin' it on the Varsity Theatre stage. All my complaints about low-energy indie shows were answered. Nonetheless, it got me thinking about a whole other issue. I appreciate what Girl Talk (aka Gregg Gillis) does, but does it make for a good live show? And what about DJs who use computers v. turntablists? Some might say what follows is a shameless plug ... so be it. My friend Mike Pendon, aka DJ Jester, has been doing Girl Talk-style mash-ups for years ... with turntables. (And technically, that wasn't such a shameless plug. I don't know Gregg Gillis personally, but he's a friend of a friend. Personal loyalties don't factor into this post.) The last time DJ Jester played in Minneapolis at the Triple Rock over a year ago, on tour with Of Montreal, I saw the guy lay down a 50 Cent a cappella track to a polka beat.
1930s Chinese poetry reflects disillusion in American dream
IN 1985, RICHARD Turner, an Orange resident and professor of fine art at Chapman University, visited San Francisco's Angel Island Immigration Station, a California state park, and saw intricate poems carved and painted on the walls of the men's barracks. They were created by Chinese immigrants who were detained on the 470-acre island in the middle of San Francisco Bay under Chinese exclusionary laws in the early 20th century. The poems — long forgotten until they were rediscovered accidentally in 1970 by a park ranger — express grief, frustration, nostalgia and the broken dreams of the languishing victims. The works inspired Turner's sculpture, "Bridge to Angel Island," which flanks the entrance to the art gallery of the University Art Museum on the Cal State Long Beach campus.
King Diamond Still Writing New Album
"King is at the moment still writing lyrics. Mixing of the new King Diamond album will commence on March 5 in Dallas, TX. We hope to deliver the master by April 1st. No firm release date is given yet. More news as we have it!" As previously reported, King Diamond's as-yet-untitled new CD will feature 13 tracks, including an intro. Five of the new songs are written by guitarist Andy La Rocque. King Diamond's last studio album was 2002's The Puppet Master.
