Al Taubman to tell all in a book
The title is Threshold Resistance: The Extraordinary Career of a Luxury Retailing Pioneer. The publisher is Collins Business, a New York offshoot of HarperCollins Publishers. The term threshold resistance is a term Taubman uses to refer to the natural resistance customers feel about crossing the threshold of a store. In the book, he discusses what retailers have to do to overcome that feeling. Taubman certainly figured out how to get customers to enter his stores. As the title suggests, he was an extraordinary retailing pioneer whose Bloomfield Hills-based mall-development company played a significant role in revolutionizing the way Americans shop. He helped introduce the food court and the metroplex theater, among other innovations. Taubman politely declined to discuss his book this week at a downtown event, but his longtime spokesman, Christopher Tennyson, talked about it Wednesday, saying it will cover everything from growing up in Pontiac to the Sothebys price-fixing case that resulted in Taubman going to prison for 9 months.
Some Bob Jones seniors to show their academic skills on 'The Nation's Report Card'
Some seniors at Bob Jones High School will be working on an extra report card this semester. Luckily, it's a stress-free exercise because their work will be shown on "The Nation's Report Card." "The Nation's Report Card" is the nickname for the National Assessment of Educational Progress program. The U.S. Department of Education administers this study. "(It is) the only national assessment that shows what students across the country know and can do in key subjects, such as reading and mathematics," said Rosalyn Smith, a Bob Jones counselor. The department selected high schools and seniors at random to participate. Seniors will take the 90-minute test on Feb. 22 in the Zompa Auditorium. "Although a few students will take a reading test, most will take a writing assessment and others math," Smith said.
