Sudan paper shut down
KHARTOUM - Sudanese authorities have shut down a newspaper for publishing details on the case of a murdered journalist in defiance of an official ban, sources at the paper said. The independent daily Al-Sudani was ordered to close following the brief detention of its editor-in-chief Mahjoub Urwah and one of its reporters. "After six hours of questioning, Urwah and the reporter were released on bail and handed a letter from the prosecution ordering the indefinite closure of the newspaper," senior journalists at Al-Sudani said. The prosecution had on Tuesday circulated an order to all Khartoum newspapers banning any reference to the case of slain journalist Mohammed Taha Mohammed Ahmed, chief editor of the pro-Islamist Al-Wifaq paper, who was killed in September.
