An open letter to President Bush
I am writing in response to your State of the Union address last week. First of all, I apologize for not watching it on television. Do not take it personally; if John Kerry were President, I probably wouldn't have watched him either. But I did read your speech.
Your staff had promised that the speech would address energy policy, and it certainly did. I agree with you that America must "diversify" its sources of energy. By all means, let us explore new technologies and biofuels. You also said that "we must step up domestic oil production in environmentally sensitive ways." I could not agree more.
But while I agreed with everything you said, I was bothered by what you did not say. Namely, you never used the word "conservation."
You set a goal of reducing America's oil consumption by 20 percent over the next 10 years.

Kindergartners find success in writing
HOLYOKE - It seems impossible: Children who cannot read and are one-third of the way through learning the 26 letters of the alphabet are learning to write stories. Kindergartners in schools across the city are learning to write far more than their name. They are writing short stories with a beginning, middle and end and comparing their experiences to those in a book. This year three elementary schools, E.N. White, Dr. Marcella Kelly and H.B. Lawrence, implemented a writing program to complement the grant-funded Reading First program started two years ago in early grades. The change started when educators aired concerns that the reading program lacked writing, a skill children need to pass the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment Systems exam later, said Ellen D.

On January 29, Dong-A Ilbos headquarters received a phone call reporting that an essay similar to one of Dong-A Ilbos columns was shown in another newspaper: Science of Currency in an Korean economic daily. The essay introduces a foreign currency depicting the portrait of a famous scientist and appreciates the Korean 10,000 bill featuring Hon-Cheon-Ui, an astrological device of the Joseon Dynasty on the back of the note. Details- The essay was posted on the A35 side of the economic dailys January 26, 2007 issue. Its introduction is the same as this newspapers column on the A 35 side, December 27, 2006 issue: Lets print a portrait of our scientists in our new currency under Science World section. The columns 11th sentence was the same: Many European countries created currencies printed with scientists portraits to show their respect after they had felt their great contribution to national development.
