Zen and the art of writing English kanji
At first glance, calligrapher Tomomi Kunishige produces scroll art different from traditional Chinese lettering only by their added smidgen of flamboyance. A much closer look, though, reveals that what seems to be only Chinese lettering is actually artwork spelling out English words written in a way that gets them to form the shape of the character. Kunishige calls her work Eikanji -- literally English kanji -- and she's fast make a name for herself in Japan's art world, according to Shukan Bunshun (2/1). "I got the idea for Eikanji in my student days when I was writing the English word 'truth' in Chinese calligraphy style and noticed when I'd finished that what I'd come up with looked remarkably close to the characters 'shinjitsu (Japanese for 'truth'),'" Kunishige tells Shukan Bunshun.

YAKIMA -- After being sought for nearly a week, the suspect in a Sunnyside drive-by shooting has been captured and is being held on $500,000 bail. Acting on a tip, police arrested Adrian Ozuna, 20, at a home Thursday in the 200 block of North Chestnut Street in Toppenish, Sunnyside police Detective Jim Ortiz said. Police say he is responsible for a shooting Jan. 19 in Sunnyside that left a 17-year-old rival gang member with a bullet wound to the thigh. Another man, 23-year-old Oscar Trevino, is already in custody in connection with the case. Police allege Trevino was the driver. Ortiz said Ozuna was the subject of several previous tips about his whereabouts but had managed to elude capture. "He was always just one step in front of us, but this one worked out good," the detective said, praising Toppenish police for help making the arrest.
