Berkshire Writers Room receives second grant from Massachusetts ...
The Berkshire Writers Room has received a matching grant of $750 from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. This grant was awarded through the MCC's Pittsfield Cultural Council and will support a new series sponsored by The Berkshire Writers Room, The Creative Experience held the third Thursday of every month from 7-9PM at Wild Sage, 333 North Street in Pittsfield. The Creative Experience-a TAW Series is especially designed for the new writer, for the writer that wants to get back in the game or needs a jump-start to their inspiration. Guest speakers, which include authors, poets, journalists and all genres of the arts, are featured each month to share their creative experiences. Exercises, prompts, reading, writing and drawing follow each lecture. State grants are awarded through a competitive process.

And they're part of a trend that shows that, in many cases, it's ordinary camera-toting netizens prying away our privacy -- not some Orwellian government. In "The Snoop Next Door" (subscription required), The Wall Street Journal's Jennifer Saranow profiles sites like PlateWire.com, where drivers can post the license numbers of reckless drivers, and Flickr.com, the popular photo-sharing website where photos accompanied by comments like "TalksTooLoud" expose poor cell phone etiquette. Some sites let women warn each other: as Ms. magazine reported last summer, HollaBackNYC encourages women to post photos of men who make unwanted advances.
Wildlife biology department helps point crocodile toward home
Researchers from Texas State are involved in an international attempt to identify the origin of an American Crocodile that swam to Grand Cayman from an unknown location. The endangered American Crocodile, Crocodylus acutus, was forced from Grand Cayman around 1500 A.D. because of over-hunting shortly after Europeans came to the island. Andrew Hope, Cayman Island department of environment marine enforcement officer, contacted Mike Forstner, associate professor in the department of biology, after a young male crocodile measuring more than 2 meters in length was found swimming into Old Man Bay Dec. 30. Wildlife officials in Grand Cayman want to return the crocodile to its home and needed help from the Texas State wildlife biology department to determine where the crocodile was from. "The folks in Cayman need an answer," Forstner said.
