While poets and novelists often use complex metaphors to further the reader's understanding or to stress important ideas, drafting a cover letter is not an exercise in creative writing. After all, a busy hiring manager does not have time to search for hidden meaning. COVER LETTER: "I am a wedge with a sponge taped to it. My purpose is to wedge myself into someone's door to absorb as much as possible." That sounds painful. COVER LETTER: "I'm a storyteller like Rumpelstiltskin. Though slightly taller and better looking, I, too, have been known to spin straw into gold." Expressing negativity, frustration or desperation in a cover letter or resume also is a major misstep. COVER LETTER: "I need my corporate office back! Over the past couple of years, I have been in school full time.
LORRIE CRYSTAL EIGLES | Let your creativity shine
"Creative? Who, Me?!" That's the reaction many people have when asked if they're creative. Everyone is creative in different ways and to varying degrees. One style of creativity is when people have innovative ideas, make new discoveries, create products and services and have a unique perspective of seeing and doing things. The other style is when people like to work within existing parameters with current systems, products and services and look for ways to make them better. Their creativity is practical and focused on direct application. Being artistic through painting, music, writing or acting is but one of the many forms of creativity. Creativity is found among people in every field including teaching, marketing, scientific research and engineering. When being creative, people report feeling joy, satisfaction, relaxation and losing track of time.
Writer offers insight to students
Acclaimed New Zealand author Emily Perkins will be offering tips in creative writing to AUT University's School of Languages this year. She is to teach two new papers in the Bachelor of Arts English Studies major. Perkins, the author of Not Her Real Name and Other Stories and The New Girl, says the papers are ideal for people who already write creatively and are ready to commit themselves to exploring their writing further. She says while the papers will cover the components of what makes a work publishable, there is no magic formula. "Publishers are always looking for fresh voices that can speak to our times, and students will be encouraged to discover and develop their own unique literary voices," she says. Emily Perkins describes a career in creative writing as a daily leap of faith and says she is excited at the prospect of guiding aspiring writers through an important stage of their writing development.

The TV Drama Writer's Room: Two-Day Intensive Workshop
The TV drama writing experience is different from any other type of creative writing. This intensive two-day workshop is for writers without professional television experience who want to learn how it's really done. This class will recreate the authentic experience of a professional writers' room to give students the feel of what it's really like to work in the television industry. Students will collaborate on writing a current hour-long show. We'll pitch ideas, beat out a script, write scenes, give and receive notes, rewrite and revise—just like working TV writers do. By the end of class, you can expect to have: Hands-on experience with the TV drama writing process and specific knowledge of structure and story that you can apply to your own spec scripts, which will help you stand out when approaching agents, studios, networks, and executive producers.
