Molly Ivins (1944-2007)
Molly Ivins, the liberal Texas columnist best known for her down-home humor and biting wit, passed away on Jan. 31, 2007. We at Creators Syndicate are deeply saddened by this loss to us individually and to newspaper readers around the world.
When Molly Ivins began her journalism career at the Houston Chronicle in the late '60s, no one, including her, realized the tremendous impact her political writings would have on our nation. Her friendly, approachable style changed the tone of newspaper column writing, and she fast became a reader favorite.
Richard S. Newcombe, president of Creators Syndicate, said he was personally saddened by the great loss.
"When Molly joined Creators Syndicate in 1992, she brought excitement and levity," he said. "I had admired her columns in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, especially the way she infused political issues with color and personality.

The Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank Charitable Foundation has for the seventh year awarded mini-grants to 46 teachers from 29 Cape schools.More than 1,000 students will benefit this year; some materials purchased with this year’s grant money will benefit students for years.Take, for example, the $300 awarded to Valerie Schultz, music teacher at Laurence MacArthur Elementary School in South Yarmouth. Schultz has ordered 12 ukuleles to teach songwriting to pre-kindergarten through third-grade children. "All one needs to do is glance through the winners’ applications to see just how interesting classroom learning can be made. Each year, there are always a number of new programs created," says Cape Cod 5 spokesman Gordon Wright.Selected from among 78 applicants, eight teachers in the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District and nine from Barnstable received grants.
Blair forced Goldsmith to drop BAE charges
The attorney general, Lord Goldsmith, changed his mind about whether there was enough evidence to bring corruption charges against the arms company BAE after pressure from Downing Street, legal sources have told the Guardian. In emergency meetings before Christmas, Lord Goldsmith initially agreed with lawyers and prosecutors that the Serious Fraud Office could bring charges against the former head of BAE Sir Dick Evans. The allegations involved backdoor gifts to the then head of the Saudi air force, Prince Turki-bin-Nasser. .

Rashme Sehgal's first novel is not just a heady mixture of political and sexual power games, It is an insider view of the way the fourth estate operates in India, ideally placed in New Delhi where all the power broking goes on behind closed doors. It shows that the Indian media owners are complicit in these corrupt machinations. Rashme Sehgal is a successful journalist who worked on several major Delhi based newspapers and, for two decades, she has had a ringside seat on the arena of events she describes. The novel begins chillingly with the public execution of an upper class girl, Paro, and of her lower caste lover Jano by their relatives, with the witnessing village remaining complicity silent. There is no intricate social explanation of this gruesome event: the indifferent witnessing of the entire village is shown to be ordinary.
